لقد مر أكثر من شهر منذ مقتل جورج فلويد في مينيابوليس في 25 مايو، على يد شرطي وضع وزنه الكامل على عنق السيد فلويد لأكثر من 8 دقائق، بينما وقف زملاؤه الأربعة يتفرجون. كان جورج فلويد (46 سنة) أميركياً أسود غير مسلح. أدى المقتل إلى مظاهرات حاشدة في جميع أنحاء الولايات المتحدة ضد وحشية الشرطة. و اندلعت المظاهرات ايضاً في العديد من المدن الأوروبية وفي جميع أنحاء العالم العربي. الحجم الهائل للمظاهرات أدى إلى اشتعال الجدل حول العنصرية، ليس فقط في الولايات المتحدة، بل في جميع أنحاء العالم.
فيما يلي مقابلة مع صديقتي العزيزة ميكاله. ولدت ميكاله في مدينة توليدو في ولاية أوهايو و درست الصحة العامة في جامعة ولاية أوهايو في كولومبوس، حيث تخصصت في علم اجتماع الصحة العامة. تبحث هذه الدراسة في كيف تتأثر الصحة بالنظم السياسية وأنظمة الرعاية الصحية، والعوامل الاجتماعية مثل العرق، والحالة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، والموقع الجغرافي، وحالة الإعاقة، والعمر، والجيندر، والتوجه الجنسي، وما إلى ذلك.

شكرا على إتاحة الفرصة لي للتحدث مع جمهور أوسع حول هذا الوضع المأساوي. منذ أسبوعين لم أخرج إلى الشوارع بسبب ظروف شخصية. عندما كنت أنا وصديقي نساعد المتظاهرين، كان الوضع متوتراً. كنا نخرج أكثر الوقت في المساء بعد الساعة الخامسة. في أحد الليالي بقينا في الخارج حتى منتصف الليل. كان ذلك قبل فرض حظر التجول في المدينة. كانت الشرطة ترتدي دائماً ملابس مكافحة الشغب. كانت أكثر مجموعات المتظاهرين سلمية باستثناء بعض الناس الذين كانوا يرمون زجاجات المياه على الشرطة بين الحين والآخر. يبدو أن الشرطة اعترضت على تجمع الناس في مجموعات كبيرة.
سأشرح نموذجاً من التواصل مع الشرطة: تأمرنا الشرطة بتفريق المجموعة ومغادرة المنطقة، وعندما نرفض يطلقون الرصاص الخشبي الكبير الحشد وترشنا بالغاز المسيل للدموع. أُصبت مرتين برصاصة خشبية وصديقي مرة واحدة. هذا الرصاص الخشبي يمكنه أن يمزق الجلد ولكني كنت محظوظة لأني حصلت على كدمة فقط. بعد أن تقوم الشرطة برش الحشود، يهرب الجميع حتى يهدأ الغاز. ثم يجتمع مرة أخرى ويستمر في الاحتجاج السلمي. تتكرر هذه العملية مرارا وتكرارا. أحياناً تبدأ الشرطة بملاحقة المتظاهرين واعتقالهم. مازلت لا أفهم لماذا تتصرف الشرطة بهذه الطريقة. لدينا الحق في التجمع والاحتجاج السلمي. يبدو أن الشرطة تشعر بأنه ليس عليها احترام هذا الحق.
2. هل الاحتجاجات في كولومبوس أفراداً تجمعوا مع بعض أو هناك مجموعات أو منظمات نشيطة في المظاهرات؟
يبدو لي أن أكثر المتظاهرين أفراداً تجمعوا مع بعض، ولكن الآراء متضاربة في ذلك. يدعو بعض النشطاء أن ذلك وهم معمول عن قصد لحماية هوية منظمي المتظاهرين.
3. ما هو الشعور الرئيسي لدى المتظاهرين؟ غضب، حزن أو إحباط؟
أعتقد أنهم يشعرون بالثلاثة في أوقات مختلفة، وأنا ايضاً. يبدو أن الحزن لمقتل جورج فلويد يتحول إلى غضب عندما تصبح الشرطة عنيفة ضد المتظاهرين السلميين. في لحظات الرعب هذه، نتذكر جميع ضحايا وحشية الشرطة. يتم تذكيرنا بأن كوننا أبرياء ومطيعين القانون لن يحمينا من هذه الوحشية. في تلك اللحظات، نجتمع وجهاً لوجه مع حقيقة أن حريتنا للتعبير والتجمع يمكن انتهاكها بسهولة. يمكن للشرطة انتهاك حقوقنا وقتما تريد. يمكنها قتلنا متى تريد بغض النظر عن جرائمنا أو عدم ارتكابها. إنه أمر يُغضبنا أننا مازلنا نقاتل من أجل حياتنا. يتحول هذا الغضب إلى إحباط عندما نفكر في حقيقة أننا نكافح من أجل المعاملة العادلة لأكثر من 400 عام.
4. هل كانت الاحتجاجات في كولومبوس سلمية، أم كان هناك نهب وعنف مثل مدن أخرى؟
كان ثمة نهب. كانت هناك حرائق وتناثر زجاج النوافذ. لقد شاهدت كثرين في سن المدرسة الثانوية يكسرون النوافذ في وقت متأخر في الليل. هناك عدد قليل من الناس يستغلون الاحتجاجات ويستمتعون بالتخريب. هناك أيضاً أشخاص ضد حركة “حياة السود مهمة” الذين يدمرون الممتلكات محاولة أن يعطوا الانطباع إن المتظاهرين أكثر خطورة. مع ذلك، هناك ناس غاضبين ولا يعرفون ماذا يفعلون بصدمتهم أو غضبهم، فيكسرون بعض النوافذ.

أنا لم أر أي متظاهرين مسلحين يحتجون ضد المتظاهرين. لقد حُذِرتُ من أن هناك رجال بيض غاضبين جداً من حركة “حياة السود مهمة”، و يتجولون في سياراتهم مصوبين أسلحتهم نحو السود. لم أعش هذه التجربة، ولكن لن أفاجأ إذا رأيتها تحدث. أنا متأكدة من أنك تعرفين أن كثيراً من الناس في الولايات المتحدة يحملون الأسلحة ويشعرون بأن لديهم الحق في استخدامها ليس للدفاع عن حياتهم ومنزلهم فقط، ولكن أيضاً للدفاع عن نمط حياتهم ومعتقداتهم.
6. وليست هذه المرة الأولى التي تؤدي فيها وحشية الشرطة إلى احتجاجات واسعة. هل تشعرين أن هذه الاحتجاجات تختلف عن الاحتجاجات السابقة؟
هناك اختلافات كثيرة بين هذه التظاهرات والتظاهرات السابقة. أولاً، لقد حصلنا على دعم دولي أكثر مما اتذكر إننا حصلنا عليه لمشكلة أو قضية في المقام الأول مسألة السود. العالم كله ينتبه ويشعر بنفس الاشمئزاز الذي نشعر به نحن. ثانياً، حتى هذه الحركة لم أشارك أبداً في مظاهرة أدت بالفعل إلى نقاش جدي حول تغيير القوانين. يريد مجلس مدينة مينيسوتا حل الشرطة. يناقش المشرعون إلغاء الحصانة لتسمح بمحاسبة ضباط الشرطة عن وحشية الشرطة. أخيراً، يبدو أن هناك ظاهرة الدومينو يحدث. قد تكون ثورة. الناس ليسوا غاضبين من وحشية الشرطة فقط، بل أيضاً من العنصرية والقمع المتفشيان في الولايات المتحدة برمتها. تتم الاطاحة بالتماثيل الكونفدرالية والاستعمارية ومنعت شركة ناسكار لسباق السيارات بجميع تذكارات العلم الكونفدرالي. ناهيك عن عدد الأشخاص الذين فقدوا وظائفهم بعد كشف سلوكهم العنصري في وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.
7. هل ترين تأثير وباء كوفيد 19 على المظاهرات؟
لعب وباء كوفيد 19 دوراً في هذه مظاهرات. كثير من الناس لديهم وقت فراغ أكثر لأنهم إما يشتغلون من البيت أو فقدوا وظائفهم. لقد أدى هذا التغيير غير المتوقع دون شكّ إلى توتر كبير في حياة الناس. وأنا متأكدة من أن هذا التوتر لا يساعد على تهدئة القلق الذي يشعر به الناس بسبب وحشية الشرطة. أخيراً، بما أن كمامات منع انتشار الوباء تغطي الوجه، فالمتظاهرون يستطيعون أن يرتدوا الكمامات لإخفاء هوياتهم دون أن يُشتبه بهم. وهذا يسمح للناس بالمشاركة الآمنة دون خوف من أن يتم تحديدهم واستهدافهم من قبل الشرطة، او الشغل أو الزملاء ، أو غيره.
8. لقد شاهدتِ اشتباكات العنيفة. ما هو رأيكِ في استخدام العنف من قبل المتظاهرين والنهب الذي يحدث؟
لا يمكننا التحكم برد فعل الناس عندما يرون بأم أعينهم أو عبر كاميرات قتل شعبهم مقابل بعواقب قليلة جداً تقع على ضباط الشرطة الذين يرتكبون أعمال العنف هذه. أتوقع أن يكون لدى البشر ردود فعل عاطفية لتجارب مؤلمة وصادمة مثل هذه التجربة. أتوقع أن يكون أحد ردود الفعل العاطفية تلك هو غضب قد يدفع الشخص إلى الخروج والتدمير. لقد رأينا هذا النوع من التصرف المدمر أو الانتقام عند ضحايا سوء المعاملة وضحايا البلطجة اللفظية البسيطة. في هذه الحالات نرد بمحاولة وقف سوء التعامل أو البلطجة. لسبب ما، هذا لبس الرد على حركة “حياة السود مهمة”. بدل الدعوة إلى وقف وحشية الشرطة، ينتقد كثير من الناس المتظاهرين السود لرد فعلهم على سوء التعامل معهم والبلطجة والقتل المستمرة.
قبل أربع سنوات، حاول رياضيون سود لفت الانتباه إلى قضية وحشية الشرطة بشكل سلمي عبر الركوع خلال النشيد الوطني. بدلاً من معالجة وحشية الشرطة، رد الناس بالتهديد إيقاف لاعبي اتحاد كرة القدم الأميركي الذين شاركوا في هذا النوع من الاحتجاج.
النهب وتدمير الممتلكات بعد مقتل جورج فلويد شجعت حكومتنا على أن تبدأ بوضع تشريع يمنع وحشية الشرطة ويعاقب عليها. وهذا ليس حادثاً معزولاً. لطالما كانت الشغب والنهب وتدمير الممتلكات دائماً طرق احتجاجية مفيدة في الولايات المتحدة. أحد الأمثلة ذات الأهمية اليوم هو تمرير قانون الحقوق المدنية عام 1968، بعد 6 أيام من الشغب انتشر في جميع أنحاء البلاد بعد اغتيال الدكتور مارتن لوثر كينغ جونيور. هذا مجرد واحد من العديد من النجاحات التي كان من المؤسف أن تأتي من احتجاجات عنيفة.
أعتقد شخصياً أن في هذا البلد القضايا تحظى أكثر اهتمام بعد النهب لأن حماية الأمن الاقتصادي لبلدنا له أهمية بالغة. حماية الأشخاص الملونين من إرهاب الشرطة يبدوا إنه لا يندرج في قائمة الأولويات إلّا إذا يؤثر ذلك على الشركات.
9. هل تعتقدين أن المظاهرات سوف تؤثر على الانتخابات القادمة في شهر نوفمبر 2020؟
نعم، سوف تؤثر المظاهرات بشكل مطلق على الانتخابات. أخشى كيف سيكون عليه البلد في نوفمبر. تظهر بعض البيانات أن جرائم الكراهية ارتفعت بنسبة تصل إلى 20٪ حول الانتخابات في السنة 2016. أتذكر أنني كنت في الحرم الجامعي ولا أشعر بالأمان بسبب التهديدات المجهولة للمهاجرين والطلاب السود. هذا العام يبدو إن الوضع سيكون أسوأ بكثير. كما ذكرت، يشعر الناس بأن لديهم الحق في الدفاع عن أسلوب حياتهم بالأسلحة. مع منع العلم الكونفدرالي، يشعر الكثير من الناس بأنهم يتعرضون للهجوم. في حالة عدم إنتخاب دونالد ترامب من جديد، فأنا متأكدة من أن الكثير من الناس سوف يخشون من أن أسلوب حياتهم تحت التهديد. ولكن، إذا إنتُخب دونالد ترامب، فسيشعر هؤلاء الأشخاص بالتمكين الكافي للتعبير عن أيديولوجيتهم المتطرفة بتفوق البيض. ردا على ذلك، من الأرجح أن تستمر المظاهرات ولن يوفر دونالد ترامب أي حماية للمتظاهرين. لقد عارض بشدة حركة “حياة السود مهمة” منذ البداية. سيكون بمثابة جنون تغذية للجماعات الكراهية العنيفة وضباط الشرطة العنصريين.

لم ينتقد السود الحزب الجمهوري فقط. يشعر الكثير منهم بأن تصويتنا تم استغلاله من قبل الحزب الديمقراطي كذلك.مثال على ذلك هو مقابلة جو بايدن مع بريكفاست كلوب حيث قال: “إذا لم تصوت لي، فأنت لست أسود.” إذا فاز جو بايدن، فسوف يحتاج إلى وضع مطالب حركة “حياة السود مهمة” على رأس قائمة أولوياته لمنع الناس من الاحتجاج أكثر.
10. هل هناك أي أفكار أخيرة تودين اشارك القراء الأوروبيين أو الناطقين بالعربية بها؟
شكرا جزيلا!!! شكرا للذين يساعدون على تضخيم أصواتنا! التغيير يحدث لأنكم قررتم الدفاع عنّا. لا أستطيع أن أشرح كم اشعر بسعادة لمعرفة أن هناك ناس في جميع أنحاء العالم يدعمون حركتنا. لقد شعر الكثير منا عاجزين عن الكلام لفترة طويلة. ناس من كل العالم يسألونني كيف يمكنهم مساعدتنا في محاربة وحشية الشرطة أو يكونون حلفاء للسود بشكل عام. نصيحتي دائماً أن يُرفع المضطهدين الذين لديهم ما يقولونه. نحن قادرون على توضيح ما نريده ونحتاجه أفضل من أي شخص آخر. نحن بحاجة فقط إلى منصة للقيام بذلك. أيضاً، إذا كان أي شخص مهتماً بمشاركة الأساليب والمناهج التي ساهمت أو ساعدت لمكافحة العنصرية المنهجية / كره الأجانب / التعصب الديني / وإلى غيره، فلا تترددوا في التواصل معي و / أو مشاركة هذه المعلومات مع صديق أمريكي نشيط في هذه المعركة. أنا فخورة جداً بنا كمجتمع عالمي في هذه اللحظة التاريخية.

It has been over a month since George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis on the 25th of May by a policeman who put his full weight on Mr. Floyd’s neck for over 8 minutes, while his four colleagues stood and watched. George Floyd (age 46) was an unarmed African American. Following the murder, people all over the USA have gone out on the streets protesting police violence. But not only in the USA have people gone to the streets. Protests erupted in many European cities and throughout the Arab world. The sheer volume of the protests have led to increased debate on racism not only in the USA, but all over the world
The following is an interview with my dear friend Mykalah. Mykalah was raised in inner city Toledo in Ohio. She went on to study Public Health at the Ohio State University in Columbus, with a specialization in Public Health Sociology. This study looks at how health is impacted by political and healthcare systems, and social factors such as race, socioeconomic status, geographic location, disability status, age, gender expression, sexual orientation, etc
Mykalah has long been involved with issues of social justice. Not only has she herself regularly witnessed the consequences of social injustice, for example being regularly confronted with metal detectors and police officers patrolling the hallways of her high school, but she has also worked for the Ohio State University Multicultural Center, among others leading discussions on social Injustice. She has also worked for a nonprofit organization that addresses health disparities in the LGBTQ community in Columbus. Currently, she is putting her Public Health education to use as Covid19 Contact Tracer
Thank you Mykalah, for taking the time for this interview. You have been helping protestors by offering supplies such as water. How are you and how is the situation in on the ground in Columbus
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk to a broader audience about this tragic situation. It has been about two weeks since I have been out on the streets due to quite a few personal circumstances. When my boyfriend and I were out helping protestors, the situation was tense. We were out mostly in the evening, after 5pm. We stayed out one night until midnight. This was before Columbus was placed on a curfew. The police were in riot gear each night. The groups of protestors were primarily peaceful with the exception of a few people throwing bottles of water at the police every now and then. The police seem to take issue with the fact that people are gathering in large groups
I’ll explain a typical interaction: The police order us to break up the group and leave the area. We refuse, they shoot large wooden bullets into the crowd and spray us with tear gas. I was hit twice with a wooden bullet and my boyfriend once. Wooden bullets can break skin but I was lucky enough to just have a bruise. After the police spray the crowds, everyone runs away until the gas subsides. Then we gather together again and continue to peacefully protest. This process repeats over and over again. Occasionally police will begin chasing and arresting protestors. I still do not understand why the police are responding in this way. We have a right to assemble and protest peacefully. It doesn’t seem that the police feel they need to respect that right
Are the protests in Columbus mainly individuals grouped together or are there also organized groups or organizations active on the ground
It seems to me that the protestors are mainly individuals grouped together but there are conflicting opinions about this. There are some activists who claim that this is an illusion intentionally created to protect the identity of the people who are organizing these demonstrations
What are protestors on the ground mainly feeling? Is it rage, sadness, frustration
I think protestors are feeling all three at different times, myself included. The sadness surrounding George Floyd’s murder seems to turn into rage when the police become physically violent against peaceful protestors. In those moments of terror, we are reminded of all the other victims of police brutality. We are reminded that being innocent and following the law will not protect us from police brutality. In those moments, we come face-to-face with the reality that our freedom of speech and assembly can very easily be infringed upon. The police can violate our rights whenever they like. They can murder us at will regardless of our crimes or lack thereof. Its enraging because we are fighting for our lives again. That rage turns into frustration when we consider the fact that we have been fighting to be treated justly for over 400 years
Have the protests in Columbus been peaceful, or has there been looting and violence such as in other cities
There has been looting. There have been fires set and windows shattered. I have witnessed mostly high school aged kids breaking windows very late at night. There are a few people who are taking advantage of the protests and are having fun vandalizing. There are also people against the Black Lives Matter movement who are damaging property in an attempt to make protestors look more dangerous than they are. Still, there are people who are simply just angry. They do not know what to do with their trauma or rage, so they break a few windows
The police in Columbus have shown a violent response by pepper spraying people and some have been reported to cover up their body cams and personal information. As far as you could see, have there been any other actors than the police, such as (armed) individuals or groups who have disrupted the protests
I have not seen any armed counter protesters personally. I have been warned that there are some white men who are very angry about the Black Lives Matter movement and are driving around pointing guns at black people. I have not had this experience but would not be surprised to see it occur. I’m sure you know many people in the US are armed and they feel they have a right to use their weapons to not just defend their life and home, but also to defend their chosen lifestyle and system of beliefs
This is not the first time police brutality has led to mass-protests. Do you feel that these protests differ from previous protests
There are many differences between this protest and most others. First, we have gained more international support than I can remember having for any other primarily black issue in my lifetime. The entire world is paying attention and they are as disgusted as we are. Second, I have never participated in a protest that actually led to a serious discussion about changing laws until this movement. The Minnesota City Council wants to disband the police. Lawmakers are discussing abolishing qualified immunity which would allow police officers to be held accountable for incidences of police brutality. Finally, there seems to be a domino effect happening. Perhaps a revolution. People are not just upset about police brutality, they are upset about the pervasive racism and oppression that exists in the United States as a whole. Confederate and colonial statues are being torn down and NASCAR banned all confederate flag memorabilia. Not to mention the number of people who have lost their job because people on social media have exposed their racist behavior
Do you see the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the protests
Covid-19 has played a role in these protests. Many people have more free time because they are either working from home or lost their job entirely. This unexpected change has also undoubtedly introduced a lot of stress into people’s lives. I’m sure that stress is not helping to ease the tension people feel about police brutality. Finally, since face coverings help prevent the spread of Covid-19, protestors are able to wear masks to conceal their identities without making themselves look suspicious. That allows people to safely participate without fear of being identified and targeted by police, employers, colleagues, etc
You have seen the violent clashes first hand. What is your take on the use of violence by protestors and the looting that has been going on
We cannot control how people respond to seeing their own people murdered in person or on camera on a consistent basis with very few consequences placed upon the police officers who commit these acts of violence. I expect for human beings to have an emotional response for such traumatic experiences. I expect one of those emotional responses might be rage that might lead a person to go out and be destructive. We’ve seen these patterns of destructive and/or revenge-seeking behavior in victims of abuse and in victims of simple verbal bullying. In these instances, we respond by trying to stop the abuse or bullying. For some reason, that is not the response that the Black Lives Matter protests receive. Instead of calling for an end to police brutality, many people critique black protestors for our response to consistent abuse, bullying, and murder
Four years ago, black athletes tried to draw attention to the issue of police brutality by peacefully kneeling during the National Anthem. Instead of addressing police brutality, people responded by threatening to suspend NFL players who engaged in this form of protest
The looting and property damage following George Floyd’s murder has encouraged our government to begin creating legislation that prevents and punishes police brutality. This is not an isolated incident. Riots, looting, and property damage have always been useful forms of protest in the United States. One example especially relevant today is the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 following the 6 days of riots that ensued across the country after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is just one of many successes that unfortunately had to come from violent protests
It is my personal belief that issues in this country receive more attention after looting occurs because protecting our country’s economic security is of the utmost importance. Protecting people of color from police terror does not seem to be on the list of priorities unless it affects our businesses
Do you think the protests will affect the upcoming presidential elections in November 2020
Yes, these protests will absolutely affect the election. I am afraid of how this country will look in November. Some data shows that hate crimes went up as high as 20% around the 2016 election. I remember being on campus and not feeling safe due to anonymous threats to immigrants and black students. This year feels much worse. As I’ve stated, people feel they have a right to defend their lifestyle with guns. WIth the ban of the confederate flag, many people already feel that they are under attack. If Donald Trump is not re-elected, I’m sure a lot more people will fear their lifestyle is in danger. However, if Donald Trump is re-elected, those same people will feel empowered to express their white supremacist ideology. In response, protests will likely continue and Donald Trump will not provide any protection for those protestors. He has been adamantly against the BLM movement from the very beginning. It will be a feeding frenzy for violent hate groups and racist police officers
I will say that Donald Trump seems to currently be on the wrong side of history with his response to these protests. The media seems to be in support of peaceful protestors while he is consistently threatening them with military presence. I am not confident that he currently has an approval rating that is high enough to support his re-election
Black people have not only been critical of the republican party. Many people feel that our vote is taken advantage of by the democratic party as well. One example of this is Joe Biden’s interview with The Breakfast Club where he said, “If you don’t vote for me, you ain’t black.” If Joe Biden wins, he will need to put Black Lives Matter demands at the top of his priority list to prevent people from protesting further

Thank you!!! Thank you so much to those of you who are helping to amplify our voices! Change is being made because you decided to stand up for us. I cannot explain how good it feels to know that there are people across the entire globe who support our movement. Many of us have felt voiceless and disposable for so long. I have had people from all over ask me how they can help us fight police brutality or just be a good ally for black people in general. My advice will always be to keep uplifting the oppressed people who have something to say. We are capable of articulating what we want and need better than anybody else. We just need a platform to do it. Also, if anybody is interested in sharing methods that have worked to fight systematic racism/xenophobia/religious intolerance/etc. please feel free to reach out to me and/or share that information with a US friend who is active in this fight. I am so proud of us as a global community in this historic moment
