مقالة افتتاحية: تقديم مؤسسة إيوانا للتفاهم الثقافي

نُشرت هذه المقالة لأول مرة على موقع مؤسسة إيوانا للتفاهم الثقافي

في صيف عام 2022، وجدت نفسي أتجول في ألمانيا مع مجموعة من العراقيين من أجل مشروع يتعلق بتعزيز السلام والحوار عندما التقيت علي بخت وحسام فلاح. خلال أيامنا معاً، تحدثنا عن العديد من الموضوعات؛ الحوار والسلام والثقافة والفنون، وكل ذلك أثناء السير في مدينة برلين الرمزية.

إنشاء مؤسسة إيوانا

هذه المحادثة حفزتنا على إنشاء مؤسسة إيوانا للتفاهم الثقافي. فمجرد العودة إلى بغداد وبروكسل، بدأنا أنا وعلي في بتبادل الأفكار حول رؤية وأهداف المؤسسة. لم يمض وقت طويل قبل انضمام الأعضاء المؤسسين الآخرين: حسام فلاح، الناشط في مجالات حقوق الإنسان والصحافة بالإضافة إلى كونه مصمم جرافيك موهوبًا، وفؤاد عطية، المحلل السياسي الثاقب وانثروبولوجي حادّ العقل، ولورا بنّان-فيشر، الشابة المحترفة في مجال أبحاث السلام والنزاعات ذات الفضول القوي.

استقر الرأي من قبل الفريق على إيوانا اسماً للمؤسسة، وإيوانا هو إختصار باللغة الإنجليزية لأوروبا وغرب آسيا وشمال إفريقيا. اما في معظم لغات غرب آسيا وشمال إفريقيا فيشير إلى “الإيوان”، شكل معماري تقليدي الذي تم تطويره في بلاد ما بين النهرين ويتواجد في معظم المباني ذات طابع المحلي والديني كما اضيف ايضاً إلى المباني المعاصرة في جميع أنحاء المنطقة وهو مكان للتجمع الاجتماعي. وهذا بالضبط هو الدور الذي تهدف إليه مؤسسة إيوانا: أن تكون منصة لتبادل الأفكار ومناقشتها.

أهمية الثقافة

شخصياً، أنا مهتمة بقضايا ثقافية منذ سنوات عديدة. بالإضافة إلى كوني فنانة تشكيلية، قمت ايضاً بالترجمة من الأدب العربي إلى اللغة الهولندية والكتابة في مدونتي الشخصية (المدونة هذه) حول قضايا اجتماعية وثقافية في أوروبا والدول ذات الأغلبية العربية. لقد وجدت أن الانخراط مع الثقافات الأخرى زاد بشكل كبير من وعيي بنفسي وبالعالم الذي أعيش فيه. وبالنسبة لي، كان لا مفر من أن يتحول شغفي بالموضوع في مرحلة ما إلى مؤسسة.

كنت محظوظة بالتعرف على أشخاص متشابهين في التفكير والذين أصبحوا الأعضاء الأوائل في إيوانا. كفريق واحد، نعتقد أن الفهم الثقافي يحتل دوراً مركزياً في التنمية البشرية وبامكانه أن يعزز دمج مجموعة واسعة من الجهات الفاعلة في الأنشطة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية. لذلك، نستخدم تعريفاً واسعاً للثقافة، مما يسمح بنهج متعدد التخصصات يربط المجال الثقافي بالمجال السياسي والاجتماعي والأمني والاقتصادي وغيرها.

بالمقابل، نرى ان قوة التبادل الثقافي هي في قدرته على التثقيف وزيادة التفاهم الثقافي. علاوة على ذلك، يسمح التبادل الثقافي بانعكاس ممارسات المرء من خلال ممارسات الآخر. التبادل الثقافي ضروري أيضاً لمعالجة مجالات ذات الاهتمام المشترك مثل التدهور البيئي، والاقتصادات المستدامة، والهجرة، والتعليم، وتعزيز الديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان. كما أنها أداة مفيدة في معالجة القضايا التي شكلت عقبة أمام تحسين العلاقات والتفاهم بين الشعوب من مختلف المناطق.

تصوير منطقة (إيوانا)

ينصب تركيز مؤسستنا إيوانا على تنمية التفاهم الثقافي فيما نسميه (منطقة إيوانا)، أيّ منطقة أوروبا وغرب آسيا وشمال إفريقيا. نعتقد أنه على الرغم من وجود مبادرات تركز على التبادل الثقافي بين هذه المناطق، إلا أن قيمته لم تُستكشف بشكل كافٍ إذ لا يزال هناك سوء تفاهم في التصوير الثقافي المتبادل. وبالتالي فإننا نهدف إلى إعطاء الأولوية للنقاش وتبادل الآراء حول الجوانب الاجتماعية والمادية والعقلية للثقافة التي لم يتم تسليط الضوء عليها بشكل كافٍ في المجتمعات المعنية.

يقع مقر الفريق المؤسس في هولندا وبلجيكا وألمانيا والعراق في الوقت نفسه. وهذا يجعل مؤسسة إيوانا استثنائية حيث تمتد ملكية المؤسسة من أوروبا إلى غرب آسيا. نعتقد أن هذه مبادرة والملكية المشتركة لمؤسسة إيوانا تسمح بمعالجة قضايا التفاهم الثقافي بشكل مناسب. ما بدأ محادثة بسيطة على متن قطار في ألمانيا، شق طريقه ليصبح مؤسسة. نحن حريصون على مواصلة الحديث معكم، سواء على مدونتنا أو من خلال أنشطتنا. لذلك، ندعوك لزيارة موقعنا لمعرفة المزيد عن مؤسسة أيوانا

Opening Blogpost: Introducing the EWANA Center for Cultural Understanding

In the summer of 2022, I found myself touring Germany with a group of Iraqis for a project related to promoting peace and dialogue when I met Ali Bakht and Hussam Fallah. During our days together, we spoke about many topics; dialogue, peace, culture, and arts, all while walking through the symbolic city of Berlin.

Giving rise to the EWANA Center

This was the conversation that catalysed the creation of the EWANA Center for Cultural Understanding. Once back in Baghdad and Brussels, Ali and myself started brainstorming about the vision and goals of the organisation. It didn’t take long before the other founding members joined: Hussam, who is active in the fields of Human Rights and journalism in addition to being a talented graphic designer, Fuad, an insightful political analyst and anthropologist with a sharp mind, and Laura, a young professional in the field of peace and conflict research with a strong curiosity

We settled on the name the EWANA Center, a name which in English stands for Europe, West Asia, and North Africa, and in most of the languages of the West Asia and North Africa region refers to “Iwan”, a traditional architectural form developed in Mesopotamia and found in religious and non-religious buildings, as well as contemporary architecture all around the region. It functions as a place for social gathering. This latter is also what the EWANA Center aims to provide: a space for exchange and discussions

The significance of culture

I personally have been interested in the topic of culture for many years. Aside from my own artmaking, I have translated literature and written on my personal blog (the one you are on now) about socio-cultural issues in Europe and Arab-majority countries. I found that engaging with other cultures has greatly added to the awareness of both myself and the world I live in. For me, it was thus inevitable that my passion for the topic would at some point translate into an organisation

I was fortunate to meet like-minded people who eventually became the initial members of the EWANA Center. As a team, we believe that cultural understanding takes on a central role in human development and that it can strengthen the inclusion of a wide range of actors in social, economic, and political activities. Therefore, we are set on using a broad definition of culture, allowing for an interdisciplinary approach that relates the cultural field to that of the political, social, security, economy and others

In turn, we see the power of cultural exchange in its ability to educate and increase cultural understanding. Furthermore, cultural exchange allows for the reflection of one’s own practices through that of the other. Cultural exchange is also necessary to tackle common areas of concern, such as environmental degradation, sustainable economies, migration, education, and the promotion of democracy and human rights. It is also a helpful tool in addressing issues that have formed an obstacle to better relationships and understanding between peoples from different regions

Imagining the “EWANA” region

The specific focus of the EWANA Center is to cultivate cultural understanding between what we call the EWANA region, meaning; Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. We believe that although there have been initiatives focussed on cultural exchange between these regions, its value has been under-explored and cultural misconceptions persist. We thus aim to prioritise conversations on under-highlighted social, material, and mental aspects of cultures in the respective societies

The founding team is based in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Iraq. This makes the EWANA Center exceptional, as the organisation’s ownership is stretched across the EWANA region. We believe that this shared establishment allows for the EWANA centre to adequately address issues of cultural understanding
